The mission of Lufkin ISD is to educate and equip all students for success through exceptional learning experiences.
Lufkin/Angelina County is located in the heart of the deep East Texas pineywoods. It is surrounded by several national forests, rivers and large recreational lakes that offer fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, camping, skiing, and state park facilities. The city of Lufkin is centrally located between Houston (110 miles south) and Dallas (185 miles north).
Although the city populations (35,000) offers all the small town advantages for living and raising a family, Lufkin also enjoys a number of facilities that are usually found in much larger cities. The Texas Forestry Museum chronicles the importance of the lumber industry to our area while the Museum of East Texas and the Angelina Center for the Arts Temple Theatre provide entertainment and artistic displays. The Ellen Trout Park and Zoo with its Z&OO railroad is one of the best small town zoos in the state of Texas. The Pitser Garrison Civic Center and the Angelina County Exposition Center of Lufkin combined with the Lottie and Arthur Temple Civic Center of nearby Diboll, provide facilities for a variety of programs, meetings and events. The Angelina County Benefit Rodeo, the annual Hushpuppy Olympics, the Texas State Forest Festival, and business and health fairs are just a few of the entertainments available through these centers. Health care facilities incluse two major hospitals and over 155 practicing physicians. Two large shopping centers, home improvement centers, and numerous specialty retails centers along with restaurants and theatres, provide ample opportunities for shopping and entertainment for the Lufkin and surrounding areas.
The educational environment of Lufkin features a school district that is committed to a program of learning excellence for its children. Lufkin ISD facilities include recently 5A high school, a newly renovated middle school, ten elementary/primary schools, and one alternative campus for students in grades Pre-K through 12. Advanced degrees can be attained from Angelina College of Lufkin and Stephen F. Austin State University which is only 20 miles away in Nacogdoches.
